The 32nd European Biomass Conference and Exhibition (EUBCE) has officially commenced today in the vibrant city of Marseille, set to unfold over the next four days until June 27. This premier event brings together leading experts, industry pioneers, and policymakers to explore the dynamic landscape of biomass energy and its pivotal role in the global energy transition.

EUBCE 2024 promises an enriching experience with a series of plenary sessions that delve into the latest advancements and emerging trends in the biomass sector. Attendees will gain insights into pressing topics such as sustainable bioenergy, technological innovations, and policy developments that are shaping the future of biomass.

Dr. Paolo Bertoldi, Chair of EUBCE 2024, highlighted the significance of the event in his opening remarks. “EUBCE has always been at the forefront of driving innovation and collaboration in the biomass sector. This year, we are excited to present a rich array of discussions that reflect the rapid advancements and critical challenges we face in harnessing biomass for a sustainable energy future.”

Dr. David Baxter, Former European Commission JRC, EUBCE Executive Committee Member gives a preview of the plenary sessions.

This year’s thematic choices are:

The special plenary session, ‘Building industrial capacity for advanced biofuels’ will cover the transition to circular biomass value chains for hard to abate transport sectors and regional development and to assess investor perspectives in the drive to increase industrial production capacity. The first presentation will cover the European Commission’s study “Development of Outlook for the Necessary Means to Build Industrial Capacity for Drop in Advanced Biofuels” which aims to investigate and analyse factors contributing to the development of advanced and sustainable biofuels production within the relevant European policy and regulatory framework, to facilitate the timely market entry of advanced biofuels for achieving the 2030 and 2050 targets. This study considers the evolving EU policy context for sustainable alternative fuels, which is undergoing significant revision and forms a core component of both the “Fit for 55 package” and the REPowerEU Plan.

The first presentation, Sustainability, Impacts and Policies, will cover the European Commission’s study “Development of Outlook for the Necessary Means to Build Industrial Capacity for Drop in Advanced Biofuels” which aims to investigate and analyze factors contributing to the development of advanced and sustainable biofuels production within the relevant European policy and regulatory framework, to facilitate the timely market entry of advanced biofuels for achieving the 2030 and 2050 targets.

To complement the EUBCE experience, the organisers have arranged exclusive guided technical tours for Friday morning, where the attendees can visit and discuss innovative projects.

Spaces are limited and will be allocated to EUBCE delegates on a first come – first served basis.

The conference serves as a platform for knowledge exchange, with a diverse agenda covering critical issues like biomass conversion technologies, bioenergy integration into energy systems, and the role of biomass in achieving climate goals. With its comprehensive program, EUBCE 2024 offers a unique opportunity for participants to engage with cutting-edge research, network with industry leaders, and discuss strategies for the sustainable development of biomass resources.
