Koskisen, a leading wood products company, has unveiled its sustainability program, shaped by insights from a double materiality analysis. The program prioritizes four key areas:
Sustainable Resource Use and Biodiversity Promotion: Emphasizing the responsible utilization of natural resources and the enhancement of biodiversity.
Climate Change Mitigation and Future Adaptation: Focusing on reducing climate impact and preparing for future environmental challenges.
Investments in Circular Bioeconomy Solutions: Committing to sustainable and circular bioeconomy innovations.
Enhancing Occupational Safety and Well-being: Dedicated to improving workplace safety, employee well-being, and skill development.
“The extensive and ambitious sustainability programme has been prepared as part of Koskisen’s strategy process, and as a result it has a strong strategic connection. By making the key sustainability focus areas a central part of our operations, we also support the company’s journey on the path of sustainable growth defined in the strategy,” says CEO Jukka Pahta.
Pahta views Koskisen’s long-term carbon-sequestering wood products, made from renewable raw materials, as vital to the green transition, driving increasing demand for wood and wood-based products. Koskisen’s wood products have a substantial carbon handprint, storing more than twice the amount of CO2 emissions over their lifespan compared to the emissions produced during their manufacturing, thereby significantly exceeding their carbon footprint.
”We work systematically to meet the demand for sustainable lifestyles and consumption choices. We also help our customers succeed, mitigate climate change and adapt to the future with our products and services. Naturally, we will continue to develop our own operations in accordance with the goals defined in the programme,” Pahta continues.
The advancement of Koskisen’s structured responsibility efforts is grounded in the primary sustainability issues identified through a double materiality assessment. These factors, along with the action plan, steer Koskisen’s sustainability reporting. In the 2023 Annual Report, their reporting has been aligned more closely with the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS).
”We have systematically developed our sustainability work, related processes and reporting. The growing interest in concrete sustainability work and awareness is evident among different stakeholders, which challenges and at the same time accelerates us on the work we do and in communicating about it. As a key player in the mechanical forest industry, we have a great opportunity and at the same time a responsibility to ambitiously promote key sustainability aspects all the way from the forest to the end product,” says Sanna Väisänen, Director, Sustainability and Communications.
