Metsä Group’s Kemi bioproduct mill has successfully resumed production, following a phased restart. The mill had halted operations due to a gas explosion in its evaporation plant in March. All necessary repairs from the incident have been completed, along with routine annual maintenance carried out during the production shutdown.
To maintain the high usability and expected lifespan of the evaporation plant, the units damaged in the explosion will be fully replaced at a later, yet-to-be-determined date. In the meantime, the Kemi bioproduct mill is steadily ramping up production in alignment with its planned start-up schedule.
Metsä Fibre, a Metsä Group company, started negotiations on possible layoffs due to a long production stoppage caused by a gas explosion at the evaporation plant of the Kemi bioproduct mill on March 21, 2024. The start-up of the plant has begun after the damage was completely repaired, at the end of June, according to current information. The damage investigation was continued and the timetable was further specified as the investigations progress.
The change negotiations has started shortly after the decision was made and involved the entire workforce of the Kemi bioproduct mill, around 300 people in total. It was estimated that the planned measures, if implemented, would lead to the indefinite lay-off of several employees. Metsä Group’s pulp and sawmill business Metsä Fibre produces not only pulp and sawn timber but also other bioproducts such as biochemicals and bioenergy. Their products made from northern wood are an alternative to fossil materials. They promote a culture of diversity, equality and inclusion.
