Red Dot praises the excellences of the woodworking industry

The “Red Dot” distinction has gained international recognition as one of the most prestigious seals of quality for exceptional design. To professionally evaluate the diversity in the field of design, the award is divided into three categories: the Red Dot Award: Product Design, the Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design, and the Red Dot Award: Design Concept. Each competition is organised annually. This year to it appropriately chose a few renowned companies from the woodworking and forest industry to appreciate their excellences. The companies such as Bauwerk Parkett, Arpa, Södra and Boid have received the Red Dot Award this year.

By rotating the wood grain 45° in relation to the plank, Bauwerk Parkett and Spinpark introduces fresh avenues for crafting unique floor aesthetics. The prestigious Red Dot Award jury has acknowledged the merits of this innovative parquet design, granting it their esteemed accolade. Comprised of 39 experts from 20 countries across 4 continents, the 2024 Red Dot Award jury represents the highest echelon of design scrutiny.

In developing this new floor collection, Bauwerk Parkett collaborated with the renowned Swiss architect and design firm atelier oï, which worked hard to grasp the essence of wood as a natural material.
‘Wood is a natural and warm material that you can only understand once you touch it. Working with wood means being able to convert something that already had life in it and adding something extra,’ atelier oï’s Armand Louis explained.

‘The floor functions as the stage for our daily lives. It not only works as a backdrop for our existence, but also accommodates the countless three-dimensional elements that accompany it. With its diverse colour palette and fine patterns, parquet forms a natural frame that enriches its environment. Its unmistakable pattern turns Spinpark into an active participant in the space, as the interplay of texture, light and colour gives it a palpable presence.’

‘We are very proud that our latest collection got the coveted Red Dot Design Award. It brings Spinpark and the Bauwerk Parkett brand into the field of vision of architects and creative professionals even further. International recognition like this also underscores not only our design philosophy, buy also our ceaseless pursuit of innovation and excellence,’ Pia Kautz, Head of Brand & Communications at Bauwerk Group, emphasised.

Spinpark has been available in three natural colour shades since January 2024: Oak Natural, Oak Avorio and Oak Caramello, all with a natural-oiled surface and a lively grading. This new product by Bauwerk Parkett enables a total of ten different, creative laying patterns. One particular feature of it is that the elaborate chevron look can be achieved with a parallel pattern. Because it is produced without bevels, Spinpark creates a uniform look, subduing the outlines of individual planks.

Tuet, that is the first Deep Surface created by Arpa, has been honored with the esteemed Red Dot Award for Product Design 2024. Praised by the Red Dot jury, Tuet introduces a remarkable depth to spatial perception, infusing living spaces with a blend of natural allure and dynamic ambiance.

Introduced in 2023, this ribbed surface draws inspiration from the reedbeds along the Tanaro river in Piedmont. Tuet, available in two wood decors, offers a dynamic tactile encounter, blending a gentle touch with a delightful wavy sensation.

The award ceremony is set for June 24 at the Red Dot Design Museum in Essen, Germany. This marks Deep Surface’s second acknowledgment, following its previous win of the “High Product Quality” Interzum Award in 2023.

The Red Dot Award: Product Design is an international design competition started in 1955. Winners are selected by a 39 member-jury following the motto “In search of good design and innovation.” Arpa’s decorative high pressure laminates are produced in the 150,000-square-metre plant in Bra, in the Piedmont area of Italy, and are expressions of a lively and original “Made in Italy” creativity.
More than 60 years of investment in research, advanced technology and personnel training have allowed the company to achieve a position of primary importance and a reputation for great reliability in international markets; a trade characterised by competent staff, varied and excellent offerings, production flexibility and fast service.

Södra and Boid win the Red Dot Award for the efficient planting machine-

The planting machine BraSatt, Södra’s venture into cutting-edge technology for enhanced plant survival, has recently been honoured with the esteemed Red Dot Awards, widely regarded as the world’s foremost design competition. The innovation agency Boid, in collaboration with Södra, Sweden’s largest forest-owner association, has secured the prestigious Best-of-the-Best accolade in the “Autonomous” category.

Södra is consistently at the forefront of developing innovations that support forest farms. In a distinct departure for this project, they have crafted their own proprietary technology. With the introduction of BraSatt, Södra seeks to propel advancements in planting techniques. This initiative promises substantial benefits for family-owned forestry by enhancing plant survival rates and promoting robust forest growth.

“We have created unique technology for both ground preparation and planting. Through constructive dialogue and an open mind, together with a group of experts, we have quickly moved from concept ideas to showing a prototype in the field. With our investment, rejuvenation technology takes a significant step forward. Going forward, we would like to find more partners to take the next step,” says Anna Wallner, project manager for BraSatt at Södra.

To provide a more sustainable approach to planting, the consortium has developed a precision-based machine that embodies care and gentleness, while presenting a futuristic, intelligent, and reliable presence. Emphasising user experience has been central to the project, ensuring that the technology is warmly embraced by forest owners. The machine’s distinctive design mirrors the sophisticated technology within. Utilising artificial intelligence and sensors, the machine adeptly manages various conditions with consistent efficiency and exceptional precision. Each sapling is planted with exact coordinates, contributing to a knowledge bank for future use.

“Our design philosophy was that the machine should convey the same calm and confidence as a colleague in the field. Predictability is crucial when it comes to automation. Therefore, the machine has a calm and responsive design language, while its diagonal cuts give a clear direction. We have ensured that the operator can easily guide and plan the robot’s work with a route planner and an intuitive interface, creating a reliable companion in the forest,” says David Lamm, Creative Director at Boid.
